A certificate of organization has been issued for the Interact Club of McCracken County.  Thank you to Melanie McNeill for leading this effort.  We are in need of Rotarians to serve on the Interact committee.  As a committee member you will serve as mentor to our Interactors and occasionally attend meetings at either MCHS or PTHS. If you would like to help with this effort please contact Melanie at [email protected].

February Events

Our Polio Plus Dessert Auction was held on February 13 with Robert Alexander conducting the auction assisted by the ever-entertaining Jamie Futrell.  We raised over $5,700 for Polio Plus.  Thank you to Susan Carr for chairing our Desert Auction Committee with committee members Lisa Summers, Carolyn Roberts, Melanie McNeill, Shawn Turner and Phyllis Russell.

The Rotary Speech Contest was held on February 20.  Addie Rogers of Paducah Tilghman High School was awarded first place, Kate Criner and Lillian Wisner also from PTHS took second and third, respectively.  Laura Duff chairs the Speech Committee and instituted changes this year that resulted in an increase in participation.  The contest was moved to The Carson Center and took place before our Wednesday lunch meeting.  Many thanks to Rotarians Dann Patterson, Emerson Goodwin, Missy Eckenberg, Ben Brazzell, Carolyn Roberts, Joni Hogancamp, Mike Resnick and Anita Lentz for assisting with the contest.  Rogers will advance to the sectional contest in March.

Our Club celebrated World Rotary Day by taking time to read at six area schools on February 22 and March 1.  A big shout out to Rotarian Susan Baier for organizing our World Rotary Reading Day and for her fantastic book recommendations as well!  Susan reports that 19 Rotarians participated along with two of our speech contestants.  We read in 16 classrooms in 7 different schools.

Laurie Latham served as our February 2019 Speaker Chair and she lined up a variety of speakers highlighting our river industry.  February 6 Bill Miller, Executive Director Paducah McCracken County Riverport Authority talked about the opportunity we have in our community with the Foreign Trade Zone status.  On February 20 Damon Judd, President of Marquette Transportation spoke about careers that are available in the river industry and the impact on our local economy.  February 27 brought us Chad Pregracke, President and Founder of Living Lands and Waters.  Chad spoke about the massive river clean ups he has led over the last two decades.  Chad was recognized by CNN as Hero of the Year in 2013.  He also received a Jefferson Award for Public Service and was recognized at a Points of Light Tribute in front of four living U.S. Presidents.
