2015 Scholarship Recipients

Each year, the Manteo Rotary Club’s Scholarship Committee reviews applications submitted from both Manteo High School and Cape Hatteras Secondary School. All seniors who aspire to a college career are welcome to apply. A group of finalists is selected and each candidate is interviewed. After an in-depth review, the scholarships are awarded to those students who demonstrate strong academic achievement, notable contributions to his or her school and local community, and considerable financial need. The Manteo Rotary Club takes great pride in offering support to these outstanding young men and women each year, and we are grateful to the many businesses and groups that help with this effort.

Manteo High School

James Cahoon — Very active in sports and community service, James’s mature, dependable nature will suit him well as he pursues an engineering degree at NC State University. James received the Manteo Rotary Club Scholarship in recognition of his outstanding intellect, service to school and community, and motivation to succeed.

McKayla Creef — Possessing a tremendous will to succeed, McKayla will pursue a double major at North Carolina Wesleyan College in both psychology and sociology. Speaking of herself, McKayla says, “It seems like I have been on the go my whole life!”

Morgan Davis — After beginning at College of the Albemarle for her first semester, Morgan looks forward to majoring in marine biology after transferring to UNC Wilmington. Energetic, organized and positive, Morgan strives to be an excellent role-model for her younger siblings.

Abby Haywood — NC State University will be lucky to have Abby come aboard as a student. “I am motivated to be active in my community, school, sports (or any competition) which will allow me to contribute greatly to the University,” she says.

McKenzie May — Meredith College is lucky to have this talented young woman coming aboard. She will work at a double major: mathematics and computer engineering. But while she is away, we will miss her terrific community volunteer work and strong involvement in school activities.

Kaitlin Midgett — With her love for math, Kaitlin will excel as an engineering major at NC State University. From an early age, Kaitlin has been fascinated by mathematics, science and technology, and she would like her contributions in these areas to benefit the Outer Banks.

Waverly Reibel — “My dream is to become an orthopedic surgeon…” says Waverly, who heads off to Florida State University to be a pre-med major. After becoming a doctor, Waverly hopes to work in developing countries to help those who do not have regular access to healthcare.

Savanah Rollinson  — Having unusual strength of character, dedication to family, excellence in academics and uncommon verve in her extracurricular activities, Savanah will contribute greatly to Meredith College, where she will bring energy and creativity to her textile technology major.

Ashley Schillings — Filled with determination, Ashley declares that she “cannot remember a time that I have not been pushing myself to reach higher.” She looks forward to majoring in education at Meredith College, and to offering volunteer help in her new community.

Hannah Smith — As someone who loves to learn history, Hannah hopes to major in that topic — and then teach it at the high school level. As a poet, a devoted church-goer, and active in both school and community, we know Hannah will be a great asset to UNC Chapel Hill.

Cape Hatteras Secondary School

Caroline Howell — A course at Caroline’s high school inspired her to major in anthropology at Western Carolina University. Active in her church, this young lady seems to personify competence and self-assurance. “I think things through carefully,” says Caroline of herself.

Violet Krawchuk — Possessing strong leadership skills, Violet says: “Once I’m in charge, I get things done!” Doing volunteer work in Haiti, she deepened her love of human beings; “they changed me more than I changed them.”  At Mid-Atlantic Christian University, Violet will major in Cross Cultural Ministry.

Britni Rausch — At Full Sail University in Florida, Britni will major in music production. Self-reliant, artistic, and exceptionally bright, Britni possesses a high regard for honesty and loyalty, “both of which I strive to maintain in my life, as well as humility.”

Kate Tawes — Kate says of herself: “I just keep going!” A hard-worker, smart, and full of community voluntary spirit, Kate is also athletic, confident and a great friend to many. Attending East Carolina University, she looks forward to becoming a nurse anesthetist.

Katie Williams — A Hatteras native, Katie would love to excel in her studies, graduate with a nursing degree and come back to the Outer Banks to serve her home community. Dedicated, responsible and an extraordinarily hard worker, Katie will major in nursing at East Carolina University.
