Spartanburg Rotarian Inducted Into SC Aviation Hall of Fame

Major General Darwin H. Simpson, US Army, retired, and a Spartanburg Rotarian for the past 24 years, will be inducted to the S.C. Aviation Hall of Fame on Feb. 25, 2021 as part of South Carolina Aviation Association’s Annual Conference.

The S.C. Aviation Hall of Fame honors pioneers and leaders in the aviation industry who have made significant contributions to the development, advancement or promotion of aviation and have close ties to the state of South Carolina.

Darwin Simpson served as director of Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport on a voluntary basis from February 2009 through September 2017, drawing a salary of $1 per year. Simpson oversaw an extensive revitalization of many of the airport's facilities, including renovation and expansion of the airport terminal and runway improvements and extension.
Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport serves today as one of South Carolina’s premier general aviation airports and is a crucial economic development and job creation catalyst, helping to drive private investment in the Spartanburg community.

Begun in 1991 by S.C. Aeronautics Commission, the S.C. Aviation Hall of Fame celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Simpson will bring the total number of inductees to 79. The physical display is maintained at Jim Hamilton-L.B. Owens Airport in Columbia, and is open to the public from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. SCAA maintains the digital Hall of Fame at scaaonline.com.
